Jacksonville is a city shaped by water. From the St. Johns River to the creeks and wetlands that wind through our neighborhoods, waterways are an important part of our environment and identity. But a recent report highlights a growing concern: as sea levels rise and flooding becomes more frequent, Jacksonville could face an increased risk of pollution spreading through some waterfront communities.
A June 2026 investigation by The Florida Trib and Climate Central examined how flooding can interact with contaminated areas near Jacksonville’s waterways. One area of concern is the Ribault River on the Northside, where environmental organizations have previously identified problems involving fecal coliform bacteria and heavy metals. As water levels rise during storms or periods of flooding, contaminants that would normally remain concentrated in soil or specific sites can potentially be carried into surrounding waterways and neighborhoods.
This issue shows why climate resilience is about more than protecting buildings from water. Jacksonville also has to consider what that water may carry with it. Flooding can create environmental and public-health concerns, particularly in communities located near historically polluted waterways or industrial areas.
Solutions should include identifying and cleaning contaminated sites, improving stormwater infrastructure, restoring wetlands, and regularly monitoring water quality. Natural areas such as wetlands can be especially valuable because they absorb floodwater while providing habitat for wildlife.
Jacksonville’s rivers and creeks connect our communities, which means protecting them requires cooperation across the city. As Jacksonville continues to grow, environmental planning should be part of how we approach development and flood protection. Rising water may be difficult to prevent, but we can take steps now to make sure pollution does not rise with it.
