The St. Johns River is one of Jacksonville’s most important natural resources, but protecting it continues to be an environmental challenge. Recent efforts across Northeast Florida are focusing on reducing pollution and restoring habitats that are essential to the river’s health.
One major concern is nutrient pollution. Nitrogen and phosphorus can enter the river through urban stormwater, wastewater, septic systems, and agricultural runoff. In excess, these nutrients can contribute to harmful algae growth and lower oxygen levels, creating dangerous conditions for fish and other wildlife. The St. Johns River Water Management District reports that projects with its partners have removed more than 600,000 pounds of nitrogen and nearly 200,000 pounds of phosphorus annually over the past seven years.
Another focus is restoring submerged aquatic vegetation, or SAV. These underwater grasses provide important habitat for fish and other species, but their recovery has faced challenges from factors including water depth, water color, and nutrient pollution. A new effort supported by $2 million in funding aims to restore 150 acres of SAV in the Lower St. Johns River.
In Jacksonville, local organizations are also encouraging residents to get involved. St. Johns Riverkeeper has continued organizing cleanups around the city, including events along McCoys Creek and in downtown Jacksonville. These community projects help remove litter while bringing attention to the connection between Jacksonville’s neighborhoods and the waterways that eventually flow into the St. Johns River.
Protecting the St. Johns River will require long-term cooperation between environmental organizations, government agencies, scientists, and residents. Whether it is reducing pollution, restoring underwater habitats, or simply keeping trash out of local creeks, every effort contributes to a healthier river—and a healthier Jacksonville.
