This week, Jacksonville is facing an unusual environmental concern: red tide. A red tide bloom was recently detected near Fort George Inlet, just north of Jacksonville Beach. While red tide is commonly associated with Florida’s Gulf Coast, its appearance in Northeast Florida is much less common, making this bloom especially concerning for our coastal community.
Red tide occurs when microscopic algae called Karenia brevis multiply in the water and produce toxins. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported a medium concentration near Fort George Inlet, and Northeast Florida was the only area of the state with positive tests at the time.
The effects go beyond discolored water. Red tide toxins can kill fish, harm birds and other marine life, and accumulate in shellfish. When toxins become airborne, people near the water may experience coughing, sneezing, watery eyes, or throat irritation. Pets can also become sick after coming into contact with affected water or dead fish.
For Jacksonville Beach, the bloom is a reminder of how quickly changes in the ocean can affect the community. Scientists have also found that harmful algal blooms can become more frequent or severe as coastal waters warm. Although officials are continuing to collect samples, residents should pay attention to local water-quality reports before swimming, surfing, or bringing pets near affected areas. Jacksonville’s beaches are central to both our environment and our community, making changes in their health worth paying attention to.
